A Rose in Rain

…for Jackie

The rain was a fine rain
Almost welcoming to walk in
If the weather were warmer
The rain drops falling off the blue awning
Where I waited
Were much larger drops
I was catching on the one rose
I was holding in my hand
The larger drops falling were clear as they fell
And I could almost see through them
As I continued to water the rose
Although the paper it was wrapped in
Began to sag some
I didn’t care
My friend would love the rose no matter what
As it was a friendship rose
Like herself
A rose in rain
To say I love you friend and
Congratulations on your 20 years sober
And on our friendship
That no rain could ever dampen!
